The streets of Grexe were filled with patrons today. Ervilli was uncharacteristically glad. he didn't know if it was the large amount of profit he gained from selling a new steam engine to a mining firm or the smell coming from a near by hay stack but he was truly glad this morning. He sat on a rock and began to people watch.
"It's truly a sight to be seen" a white bearded merchant began. "the crossbow is of the finest quality! light and tough. it is accurate for further then 500 yards. truly one of the finest bows on the market." many people gathered to see the salesman's pitch. "it has the standard repeating mechanism but this one has a feature never seen before! a small fire comes out the front upon triggering igniting the arrow thus igniting the target"
"your mad sir" someone yelled from the crowd. "the arrow would never stay lit long enough to reach the target!"
"seeing is believing" the salesman said. he rose the bow to his shoulder. Aimed. Then fired it deep into the hay stack. the arrow smoked for a moment then suddenly the hay stack erupted into flames.
the crowd gasped and cheered at the public display. an angry livestock merchant tended to the flames. Ervilli began to understand the strange smell coming from the hay stack. Oil was Ervilli's favorite perfume, it was odd he didn't recognize the scent before.
"with this you can reduce those pesky elfs to no more then ash with ease!" the merchant held the crossbow out like he was presenting a fine gift to a king.
"how much would such a thing cost" a veteran huntsman asked in delight. Ervilli started to push his way through the crowd.
"it can be yours for the cheap price of one thousand gold coin!"
Ervilli spoke "can i see the bow?"
"absolutely" the merchant said and handed it to him.
the fire was coming from a modified oil lamp. all of the bolts were tipped with a small fabric cloth. the crossbow it self was of good quality but not the finest he's seen. Ervilli wasn't typically an arms merchant but he had uses for this bow.
"i haven't got the money" Ervilli lied. "but i can make a trade for something truly powerful"
The merchant said nothing but Ervilli could tell by his eyes he was interested
"ever heard of the legendary rings of power?"
"aye," the merchant was skeptical but excited.
"i have such a ring... with it you can charm any woman... bend her to your desires and make them faithful to you for life.... any woman..."
beads of sweat rolled down the merchants face "any woman?"
"ANY woman" Ervilli said "but... there is a catch... you can only use it once and there will be adverse consequences..."
the crowd was quiet and stunned. Ervilli strained every mussel in his face to prevent smiling.
"that's excellent! deal!" the merchant yelled
Ervilli reached into his pocket and pulled out a commoners engagement ring. He tossed it it at the merchant. and walked out of town crossbow draped on his back. The crowd roared with laughter.
"Now" Evilli thought "all i need is a foolish Elf"........
